This study arises from the observation of the profusion of organized religious groups at the university and from the religious nature of acknowledgements and dedications in monographs at the closing of the course of Pedagogy at Universidade Federal Fluminense. Considering this, we investigate the relations between the students’ religious beliefs and their academic development. As we identify, at the modern materialistic racionalism...

Ao final, o MUE, revelando a existência potencial de um Espiritismo de esquerda, provocou uma forte reação de oposição por parte dos principais dirigentes do Espiritismo brasileiro, ensejando assim a sua própria extinção.; This essay has as its theme the Movimento Universitário Espírita (MUE) of the 1960s and 1970s which acted primarily in the state of São Paulo. It was a trend in the Spiritism that emerged in a time of severe social tensions...

This study compared the 7-item Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) with two other versions which include the domains "Spirituality" and "Religion", separately, in a sample of Brazilian (n = 1.047) and Chilean (n = 1.053) adolescents. A comparison of psychometric properties between the PWI versions was carried out through multigroup confirmatory factor analysis showing adequate adjustments (CFI > .95, RMSEA < .08), whereas the item spirituality presented better performance. For the analysis of the differential contribution of each domain to the notion of global satisfaction, a regression on the item Overall Life Satisfaction (OLS) was applied using structural equations. It is recommended the inclusion of the item spirituality in the original scale, considering the importance of such domain in both cultures.

This exploratory study makes a contribution to the literature on antiracism by unpacking the cultural categories through which everyday antiracism is experienced and practiced by extraordinarily successful African Americans. Using a phenomenological approach, we focus on processes of classification to analyze the criteria that members of the African American elite mobilize to compare racial groups and establish their equality. We first summarize results from earlier work on the antiracist strategies of White and African American workers. Second, drawing upon in-depth interviews with members of the Black elite, we show that demonstrating intelligence and competence, and gaining knowledge, are particularly valued strategies of equalization, while religion has a subordinate role within their antiracist repertoire. Thus, gaining cultural membership is often equated with educational and occupational attainment. Antiracist strategies that value college education and achievement by the standards of American individualism may exclude many poor and working-class African Americans from cultural membership. In this way, strategies of equalization based on educational and professional competence may prove dysfunctional for racial solidarity.; African and African American Studies; Sociology

A substantial literature has found that religiosity is positively related to individuals’ civic engagement and informal helping behavior. Concurrently, social networks as sources of information and encouragement have been suggested as the mechanism underlying phenomena including successful job searches, improved health and greater subjective well-being. In this paper we use data from the Portraits of American Life Study (PALS) to examine whether religiously based social networks explain the well-established relationship between religion and civic engagement. We test potential mechanisms including beliefs, affiliation, and social networks, and we find that having a strong network of religious friends explains the effect of church attendance for several civic and neighborly outcomes. We suggest this phenomenon may exist in other, non-religious, spheres that also produce strong friendship networks.

This dissertation argues that Protestant Christianity provided the language through which individuals and communities created the political, social, and cultural future of the post-emancipation South. Christian arguments and organizations gave newly emancipated African Americans strong strategies for claiming political and civil rights as citizens and for denouncing racialized violence. Yet simultaneously, white southerners’ Christian claims, based in proslavery theology, created justifications for white supremacist political power and eventually for segregation. This project presents a new history of the creation of segregation from the hopes and uncertainties of emancipation through a close analysis of the Mississippi River Valley region of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and West Tennessee. Religious arguments furnished foundations for the work of building a new South, whether in newly formed African American churches and schools, local political debates, or white supremacist organizing. Studying both African American and white Christians during the years when churches quickly became racially separated allows this work to explain how groups across lines of race and denomination responded to each other’s religious, cultural...

This paper reflects on my experience of teaching a 200-level interdisciplinary course on “Religion and the Environment” which fulfilled requirements for students in religious studies and environmental studies. The course was taught as a “mass seminar” in which 66 students were placed into small groups, and and emphasized seminar-style discussions and formal class debates rather than lectures. An appendix of student comments reflects positively on the format and process of the course and the paper concludes by recommending this “mass seminar” approach as a way of giving humanities and interdisciplinary education to large numbers of students. This approach, however, depends on the right type of teaching space that is flexible enough to accommodate a large number of students sitting at tables facing each other.

The authors discuss the complexities and responsibilities of teaching about Daoism in contemporary North American colleges and universities. Expanding and revising the findings of Kirkland (1998), they argue that enough has changed in educational and cultural contexts to warrant new strategies for teaching about Daoism. Textbooks are now available that offer more accurate and responsible presentations of Daoist history, and this enables a richer appreciation of Daoist culture and religion, and its significance within broader areas of Chinese culture such as art, politics, and science. On the other hand, students have a far greater possibility of interacting outside the classroom with North Americans of Chinese and European background who claim affiliation to the Daoist tradition especially through techniques of moving meditation such as Qigong and internal alchemy. This situation poses challenges in the classroom concerning claims of authenticity, tradition, and representation. Rather than shying away from these contemporary North American cultural forms, the authors argue that the skilled teacher can use these interactions to facilitate a deeper inquiry into questions of authenticity and tradition. Moreover, the authors discuss the use of an interactive website designed specifically to assist in reflecting on these issues in the classroom.

This study investigates whether culture in general and religion in particular mitigate earnings management. Using a cross-country data set, empirical tests based on rank regressions indicate that earnings management is unrelated to both religious affiliation and the degree of religiosity. In contrast, earnings management is found to be negatively related to the updated Hofstede cultural variable of individualism and positively related to uncertainty avoidance. The results also indicate that the positive impact of the legal environment in mitigating earnings management, documented by Leuz, can no longer be demonstrated after controlling for culture.; Jeffrey L. Cultural expansions, including of religions, frequently leave genetic traces of differentiation and in-migration. These expansions may be driven by complex doctrinal differentiation, together with major population migrations and gene flow. The aim of this study was to explore the genetic signature of the establishment of religious communities in a region where some of the most influential religions originated, using the Y chromosome as an informative male-lineage marker. A total of 3139 samples were analyzed, including 647 Lebanese and Iranian samples newly genotyped for 28 binary markers and 19 short tandem repeats on the non-recombinant segment of the Y chromosome. Genetic organization was identified by geography and religion across Lebanon in the context of surrounding populations important in the expansions of the major sects of Lebanon, including Italy, Turkey, the Balkans, Syria, and Iran by employing principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling, and AMOVA. Timing of population differentiations was estimated using BATWING, in comparison with dates of historical religious events to determine if these differentiations could be caused by religious conversion, or rather, whether religious conversion was facilitated within already differentiated populations. Our analysis shows that the great religions in Lebanon were adopted within already distinguishable communities. Once religious affiliations were established...

‣ A response to Christian critique of psychology as a religion

Modern psychology and psychotherapy for some, has become a functional religion. Certain Christian scholars have employed deontological ethics of mutuality and obligation to critique the implicit ethical egoist perspective of humanistic, Jungian and ego psychologies as scholars such as Don Browning believe that therapists and pastoral counselors have appropriated clinical psychologies without examining their implicit ethical egoist orientations. They believe that an ethic of generativity best exemplifies the fit between modern psychology and Christian theology. So-called "generative man" is the preferred archetype to "productive man" or "psychological man." However, the aretaic ethics of individuation and self-actualization have paradoxical utilitarian benefits for the community. It is argued that the process of narcissism associated with individuation is necessary before one can authentically embrace a deontological ethic of mutuality.

The thesis reexamines the political struggle in Transylvania from the decline of absolutism in 1860 to the eve of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (Ausgleich) of 1867 in the light of the heavy political involvement of the bishops and clergy of the Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic and Orthodox Churches in these events. The administrative and social structure of Transylvania and the role which Austrian policy-makers assigned to that province led to considerable clerical involvement in politics. Two chapters use government archives to present the course of secular politics. One chapter examines the three administrative regions of Transylvania and their social structure, while another treats the relationship of religion and popular culture. These chapters rely chiefly on social historical and ethnographic studies. Chapters five through nine consider both the secular political and the ecclesiastic activity of the bishops, clergy and laity of selected regions on the basis of church archives and personal papers. Because of its constitutional, dynastic and international position the Roman Catholic Church and its bishop in Transylvania, Lajos Haynald, are at the center of chapters five through nine. The activity and relationship with Haynald of Greek Catholic Metropolitan Alexandru Sterca-Sulutiu and Orthodox Bishop Andrei Saguna receive separate treatment. The religious communities were key players in provincial politics by virtue of their territorial organization and distinctive social composition. Ecclesiastic connections also assured the relevance of events outside of Transylvania for the course of provincial politics. The bishops...

This study is an analysis of the political behavior of the clergy in Iran during the Pahlavi monarchy (1925-1979) within the context of the interrelationship between religion and modernization. This period itself has been divided into three eras: the Riza Shah era (1925-1941), the nationalist era (1941-1953), and the post-nationalist era (1953-1979). The analytical framework adopted here is based on three behavioral motives for clerical political involvement: religious, national, and clerical corporate interests. Within this framework, various patterns of clerical political behavior are identified, each reflecting a different order of priority of interests and motives for political action. The main point emerging from this approach is that at no time throughout this period did the clergy act as a politically monolithic group. Such distinct patterns are particularly discernable during the nationalist era (1941-1953) because of the presence of greater socio-political freedom relative to the other two major eras. A major theme developed in this study is that while the greater functional differentiation and specialization caused by modernization resulted in the clergy's loss of influence and official power in the educational and legal systems...

In order to assess the debate concerning the constitutional recognition of Christianity in Europe, we need to pose the more general question of the role (if any) of the symbolic function of the modern democratic constitution in relation to religion. In the present paper, we differentiate between three stylized understandings of constitution-making, namely communitarian, liberal and discursive. Our argument is that the discursive 'model' of the symbolic function of the constitution combines the merits and avoids the demerits of communitarianism and liberalism.
