The relationship between religion and morality has long been hotly debated. Does religion make us more moral? Is it necessary for morality? Do moral inclinations emerge independently of religious intuitions? These debates, which nowadays rumble on in scientific journals as well as in public life, have frequently been marred by a series of conceptual confusions and limitations. Many scientific investigations have failed to decompose “religion” and “morality” into theoretically grounded elements; have adopted parochial conceptions of key concepts—in particular, sanitized conceptions of “prosocial” behavior; and have neglected to consider the complex interplay between cognition and culture. We argue that to make progress, the categories “religion” and “morality” must be fractionated into a set of biologically and psychologically cogent traits, revealing the cognitive foundations that shape and constrain relevant cultural variants. We adopt this fractionating strategy, setting out an encompassing evolutionary framework within which to situate and evaluate relevant evidence. Our goals are twofold: to produce a detailed picture of the current state of the field, and to provide a road map for future research on the relationship between religion and morality.

Empirical research on the determinants of economic growth typically neglects the influence of religion. To fill this gap, this study uses international survey data on religiosity for a broad panel of countries to investigate the effects of church attendance and religious beliefs on economic growth. To isolate the direction of causation from religiosity to economic performance, the estimation relies on instrumental variables suggested by an analysis in which church attendance and religious beliefs are the dependent variables. The instruments are variables for the presence of state religion and for regulation of the religion market, the composition of religious adherence, and an indicator of religious pluralism. Results show that economic growth responds positively to religious beliefs, notably beliefs in hell and heaven, but negatively to church attendance. That is, growth depends on the extent of believing relative to belonging. These results accord with a model in which religious beliefs influence individual traits that enhance economic performance. The beliefs are an output of the religion sector, and church attendance is an input to this sector. Hence, for given beliefs, higher church attendance signifies more resources used up by the religion sector.; Economics

Este trabalho analisa as concepções de Jean-Jacques Rousseau sobre a religião. Toma como principal referência o texto A profissão de fé do vigário savoiano que está inserido no livro Emílio ou da educação. Nesta obra o teísmo foi definido como uma religião natural, que fundamenta sua crença em Deus tendo como princípio: os sentimentos naturais do homem, a consciência e a razão e a revelação cristã. Assim, percebe-se que Rousseau era cristão por acreditar que a Bíblia é verdadeiramente inspirada por Deus, todavia, nota-se que, para ele, as instituições religiosas cristãs não são indispensáveis para a salvação e para a crença em Deus; por entender que o ser supremo fala diretamente ao coração humano sem a necessidade da mediação proposta pelas instituições religiosas. Rousseau ainda afirma que há a possibilidade de se conhecer Deus por outros meios, além dos evangelhos. Cette recherche porte sur la transmission religio-culturelle aux enfants de couples maghrébo-québécois islamo-chrétiens à Montréal. À la suite de l’analyse de 10 entrevues semi-directives réalisées auprès de couples parentaux, nous tenterons de répondre aux questions suivantes : Quelle appartenance religieuse les parents veulent-ils transmettre à leur(s) enfant(s) ? Comment se manifestent leurs choix dans leur pratique religieuse ? Quels compromis les parents font-ils pour l’équilibre familial et identitaire de leur(s) enfant(s) ? Comment légitiment-ils leurs choix parentaux ? Afin de répondre à ces questions, nous nous sommes donné les objectifs spécifiques suivants : 1) documenter les choix des parents concernant la transmission religio-culturelle aux enfants; 2) cerner les façons dont les pratiques et les croyances religieuses des parents influencent leurs choix; 3) expliquer en quoi ces choix se manifestent dans leurs pratiques rituelles avec les enfants; 4) dégager les légitimations que les parents font vis-à-vis de leur choix de transmission. Les résultats de notre recherche ne nous ont pas permis de trouver une logique de transmission qui s’applique à tous nos parents. Cependant, nous retenons que les enfants de notre échantillon sont identifiés par leurs parents soit comme musulmans (5 familles sur 10) soit sans religion (5 familles sur 10). L’accommodement raisonnable, perçu de manière erronée comme un outil octroyant des privilèges particuliers aux communautés ethno religieuses, fût la source d’une atmosphère de malaise social au sein de la communauté québécoise. Face à une immigration récente non occidentale, ayant fortement contribué à la modification du paysage sociétal québécois, un désarroi populaire transformé en « la crise des accommodements » (2006-2007), s’est emparée soudainement d’une partie de la population canadienne – française. Plusieurs questions fondamentales relatives au droit à l’égalité se posent : comment préserver l’identité québécoise si chacun veut faire valoir sa propre culture et religion ? Le Catholicisme et l’Islam, les deux plus grandes religions du monde numériquement, connaissent des rapports oscillants entre dialogue et rivalités. Ces deux derniers se manifestent à travers une variété d’actions, nationales et internationales, ainsi que par des écrits et des déclarations. Du côté catholique, ce dynamisme est promu en particulier par la pensée du Pape Benoit XVI à l’égard du dialogue avec la religion musulmane, qui est centrée sur le respect des libertés religieuses loin de la violence, ainsi que la préservation de l’identité. Du côté musulman, il existe plusieurs acteurs soucieux de présenter une image paisible de leur religion. This essay argues that Crow, a collection of poems by Ted Hughes published in 1970, forms part of a countercultural ovement that began to emerge in the 1960s and that continues to find new forms in the current century. In the form it takes in Crow, this movement protests against a relationship between humans and nature based on a primarily Christian world view combined with what it considers an exaggerated belief in science and technology. This combination and its relation to environmental crisis was first addressed by Lynn White in his classical article from 1967, “The Historical Roots of our Ecologic Crisis”. This analysis attempts to demonstrate that the Crow poems, written in the years immediately following the publication of White’s article, express a similar set of ideas in poetic form. Hughes goes a step further than White, and envisions an alternative, spiritual rather than religious, framework for the nature-­‐human relationship. This alternative is characterised as part of a counterculture described by Bron Taylor in Dark Green Religion. According to Taylor, dark green religion defines a variant of environmentalism based on a spiritual view of nature (similar but not identical to deep ecology). Related but not limited to French studies, my work seeks to understand the variety and complexity of religion and religious experience today. With the rise of modernity, Western societies came first to doubt the foundations of religion in the name of reason, then to subject reason itself to critique. The result has been our now familiar circumstance in which we find ourselves wholly without grounds or foundations in any domain at all, and in which, since the nineteenth century, religion itself has become just one thing among others, one more institution among other institutions. Accordingly, the first step in my work is to describe, both as a philosophical project and as a practical necessity of social reality, the implications of this historical trajectory winch has culminated in what we today call a "pluralist society." The second part of my inquiry concerns the problematic status of religious experience in an environment dominated by individualism. The question arises: do we live in an entirely "disenchanted" world, or is religious experience still a real and significant phenomenon? After reading in psychology of religion and pastoral theology for several years, I began to notice that a certain strand, which might be described as iconoclastic or subversive with regard to traditional religion, runs through both fields, and characteristic of this strand often includes what I call a dynamic of reversals and restorations. That is, pastoral theologians and psychologists of religion, from Oscar Pfister to the present, often use psychological methods to critique (reverse) and then to rebuild (restore) religion. Here I explore this strand as it exists in the present by examining three recent psychological portraits of religious leaders---Donald Capps's portrait of Jesus, James Dittes's portrait of Augustine, and William Bouwsma's portrait of Calvin---in light of each author's own personal experiences. What I find is that this strand can be understood fruitfully in light of Peter Homans's writings on, and William Parsons's elaborations of, mourning religion.

The religion of Manipur may be regarded as an amalgam of the traditional religion and Chaitanyaite Vaishnavism. The former consists of belief in lai (deities), which may be classified as ancestral, tribal, domestic and tutelary gods respectively, The elaborate traditional rituals concerned every aspect of life, from domestic and agricultural rituals to rites of passage. The public festivals were especially important, especially Cheiraoba (the New Year festival) and the Lai Haraoba, a composite festival of 'pleasing the god'. After the advent of Hinduism certain of the traditional festivals came to include Hindu elements. The earliest certain traces of Hinduism in Manipur date from the year 1626 sak., when the reigning king, Charai Rongba, took the sacred thread. During the time of King Garib Niwaz Chaitanyaite Vaishnavism came under royal patronage and was made the state religion. From this position it was never displaced. The role of Vaisnavism was further developed by Bhagyachandra, and gradually a synthesis between the traditional religion and Hinduism came about. Sherpa Buddhism can be divided analytically into three different components: mahayana (represented by the monastic establishment), shamanism (represented by a variety of shaman-curers and diviners) and vajrayana {represented by married, village-based, tantric lamas). Such a division suggests that there are important differences between components within Sherpa religion. Mahayana emphasises transcendental, other-worldly concerns. Shamanism on the other hand deals with pragmatic, this worldly concerns, while vajrayana encompasses both. Now the problem with such a division is that it tends to ignore the overlap and cooperation between components found in the day to day practice of religion. Monks can be very worldly, shamans can become lamas, laymen can become ascetics. Lamas and shamans prescribe each other's rituals and often work alongside each other. The central concern of this thesis then is to explore both the differences and the relations between components, to understand how and why different doctrines, practices and practitioners coexist and are reproduced over time. I conclude that Sherpa religion is essentially a unified system, that differences are contained within and necessary to the articulation of a cohesive yet everchanging whole. To demonstrate this I focus not so much on outer forms as on inner connections. In particular I identify an underlying relationship of interdependence between transcendental and pragmatic orientations or 'modalities'. Transformations of this relationship are to be found within components as well as between them. Central to the relationship is the mediating influence of vajrayana. Résumé La diversité religieuse est un fait bien attesté aujourd’hui en République du Bénin. Chrétiens, Musulmans, adeptes des religions traditionnelles et ceux d'autres spiritualités se côtoient autant dans la sphère publique que privée sur le territoire béninois. N’épargnant donc aucun domaine de la société béninoise, cette diversité s'exprime également dans les milieux scolaires notamment dans les écoles privées catholiques du pays. La volonté du diocèse de Cotonou d'ouvrir les portes de ses écoles à tous les enfants sans distinction de religions ni d'ethnies, entraine de facto l'épineux problème de la gestion de la diversité religieuse et du pluralisme dans ses institutions confessionnelles. Sensible à cette problématique en milieu scolaire auprès des jeunes, le cas du collège catholique Père Aupiais nous intéresse pour son approche du cours de religion dispensé aux élèves du premier cycle. Le présent travail dans une démarche praxéologique, observe, analyse et interprète un cours confessionnel de religion donné en classe de 5è secondaire dans ledit collège. Ce mémoire réunit trois romans de la série Les Chroniques de vampires de la populaire écrivaine américaine Anne Rice (The Vampire Lestat, Memnoch the Devil et Blood Canticle) afin d'étudier l'évolution de sa critique de la religion à travers l'écriture. Une analyse précise et complète de Lestat de Lioncourt, le personnage principal de la série, est faite afin de mieux comprendre l'impact de la transformation spirituelle du protagoniste sur l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de Rice. Dans The Vampire Lestat, le rejet de toute forme de croyances religieuses de la part de Lestat ainsi que la déconstruction et l'érotisation de rituels religieux traditionnels reflètent l'influence de l'athéisme. Memnoch the Devil représente la transition entre le refus de croire de Lestat et son retour subséquent à la religion catholique. Finalement, Blood Canticle symbolise le retour vers la foi du protagoniste et de l'auteur, en plus de marquer la fin des Chroniques de vampires de Rice. L'analyse s'inspire d'éléments biographiques afin de démontrer l'importance de la religion dans les récits de Rice, sans toutefois considérer ses romans comme des autobiographies.; This thesis brings together three of Anne Rice's novels from The Vampire Chronicles series – The Vampire Lestat...

O trabalho é uma leitura da presença de Sevilha nos poemas de João Cabral de Melo Neto, tendo como foco o livro Sevilha andando (1989) dividido em duas partes, "Sevilha andando" e "Andando Sevilha". A pesquisa focaliza a segunda parte "Andando Sevilha", cujos poemas sobre a arquitetura, as manifestações culturais sevilhanas, incluindo a religião, integram a linhagem de assuntos populares e humanísticos desenvolvidos por João Cabral nos poemas sobre Sevilha e que caracterizam a mulher da primeira parte do livro, "Sevilha andando". O livro Sevilha andando representa o projeto poético humanístico de João Cabral ao retratar Sevilha em seus poemas como uma forma de expressão humana, destinada ao usufruto de sua população. A religião, tema incontornável da cultura ibérica por estar presente na história, na cultura, nas tradições, nos costumes e nos monumentos sevilhanos, é o foco da presente pesquisa e apresenta duas abordagens em "Andando Sevilha". Na primeira, este assunto é retratado em torno dos aspectos populares, coletivos e de união por vivificar os laços sociais, como é expresso no poema "Semana Santa".
